Be sure your new compost pile contains roughly the same proportion of dried and green plants. Green means plant cuttings including grass, produce and weeds. Dried plant materials are things like shredded newspaper, cardboard, sawdust, straw, and any cut up wood materials. Your compost pile should never contain meat, ashes or charcoal.
